Artist Statement
This poetry project – The Augmented Reality Poetry Machine – seeks to make connection in a time of isolation and despair, in an unreal and ephemeral environment.
The meaning of this project has changed over the years. During the pandemic, the meaning was to connect through isolation, and to highlight that it was not location-based engagement that created meaningful encounters. The current meaning may be that Poetry and poetic moments and encounters are all around us. But to see it, do you need a specific lens? Who has access to make the poetic visible? What role does class, place, and access play in witnessing the poetic? How are those without access to the AR environment supposed to know that Poetics are all around? Moments of meaning are ephemeral.
Ultimately, the purpose of poetry is to name the unnamable, and to bear witness.
In the invisible, you are seen.
We see you.
